Description

~Youthful and vigorous, Rafael stands as a proud Latin-American in his early twenties. Black hair trimmed short frames light-skinned and serious features. Bright, brown eyes scan the setting from his narrow face. Rafael wears the latest in “street fashion”. The newest design of sneakers, jeans, and casual shirt clasp to his sturdy, athletic frame. A black, leather jacket usually completes the ensemble. An onyx necklace winds close around his neck, and a large brass ring displays oval lapis. A gold ball bearing pierces his left earlobe. History

Youth

The Ruys began as a sizeable family when Rafael was born in San Juan almost two decades ago. He had three older siblings from the start: José, Arduardo, and Jésica. For eight years, the Ruys dwelled in their homeland capitol. But his parents could not prosper. They decided to move to mainland USA. Rafael, just showing promise on his little league baseball team, was taken from his friends and island to New York City.

And New York City didn’t last all too long either. When Rafael was ten years old, the Ruys were faced with too much difficulty to stay. It didn’t help that they had another child: Teresa. The family was having financial difficulty in the Big Apple. So they reviewed other options in America. They pulled up stake and moved westwardly just as Rafael was beginning to grasp English. For several months, Rafael lived on the road with all but Arduardo, who graduated high school and joined the army.

Eventually, they made their way to Kansas City. In the Hispanic sector of the city, they once more tried to settle down. Rafael’s parents and older siblings had pulled in loose cash over the past few months and they could put down a security deposit for a cheap apartment. Since it was summer, Rafael just helped take care of his little sister, for whom he had great affection.

When school started up that fall, Rafael returned to school. He never proved to have much head for academic studies. But he excelled at school athletics, joining the baseball and wrestling teams in junior high. He was also a charming youth, and enjoyed a number of dates with classmates. Though life wasn’t great, it wasn’t bad for Rafael or his family.

Cachiporras

But then the neighborhood received a new influx of poor Mexicans. While there was nothing bad about that, with the multiple new families came a pre-established youth gang. They called themselves the Cachiporras -- “Blackjacks”. Ruffians and thugs all, these guys believed in beating up anyone in their way, anyone loaded with cash…or just for the hell of it. Rafael was confronted with little choice: join or be a victim.

So he began to hang out with the Cachiporras, earning full membership after helping them beat up an older black teen who was trying to sell drugs on their street. Rafael soon joined in with his gangmates in occasional muggings and even armed robberies. The cash he brought in went especially to his wardrobe and his little sister’s childish desires. He doted on Teresa the way his parents couldn’t -- his father was recently laid off and unemployed, and his mother could only find part-time work at night away from her family.

And Rafael’s little gang’s escapades were fairly successful (if small-time) for the first couple years. But when he was sixteen, a robbery of a 7-11 uptown went bust. The cops were on them like flies on mierdo. Most of the gang was chased down, thrown down, and arrested. Rafael ended up in prison after that. He served two years in juvenile hall. And almost everyday of that was an unpleasant and even violent. Rafael learned to be careful when he slept, and more about how to defend himself.

So much for rehabilitation. When the law forced Rafael out on parole when he turned eighteen, he returned to his family. Though his parents were clearly disappointed, they welcomed their son home. Under the watchful eye of a parole officer, Rafael obtained a job somewhere, anywhere. It happened to be a local Burger King. For almost a year, he faithfully served in this crap job, under his nosy parole officer’s supervision. As the first year neared its end, Rafael began to plot how he would go about earning real money.

Recent Years

When finally free from probation, Rafael immediately contacted his old Cachiporra pals. But the gang was all scattered and done with. Everyone had gone their own ways. So Rafael knew it was time for him to do the same. He got his hands on a new piece of hardware and returned to his previous “career”: armed robbery and mugging (though he has never killed anyone). Money obtained once more went to improve his and his teen sister’s wardrobe. She was getting expensive! But while Rafael didn’t mind that, he needed to find a way to score bigger hits. The skinny on the street from a fellow former Blackjack led him a congregating group of thieves calling themselves the Misfits. Perhaps here, Rafael decided, he could at last score big and “retire” from this job. Maybe even go to college. Heh. A man can dream.

Unfortunately, the Misfits didn't pan out. Now Rafael, with an acquaintance or two from that outfit, began to look for a new avenue. He was always a go-getter, but Rafael was beginning to wonder if he should let life happen to him awhile until the road to success became more clear.

Significant Other

Rafael Ruy and Min Curtis met each other in the brief and failed Misfits gang in early 2004. They began to work with each other on petty heists and robberies. Their companionship turned sexual in due time. The young thieves simply enjoy their working relationship quite a bit! Whether the future holds big-time wealth or only jail-time, these two will stay together awhile to come yet.

The heat after a particularly big job got too much in 2007, and Min apparently skipped town while Rafael laid low. He texts her now and then, but she hasn’t responded.

Min

Weakness
"Live by the Sword..."

Rafael is a thug, plain and simple. Sure, he has a soft spot for family and especially his sister. But that hardly justifies armed robbery. Someday, he's probably going to be shot dead.

Likelihood of Corruption

Average.

Rafael doesn't hang out around infernally-corrupted thieves. Though he's far from sainthood, thus far he isn't a truly wicked man. It's about making ends meet. It just happens to be done illegally. Breaking all but the worst laws doesn't make one a sinner, nor does it necessarily attract evil spirits...or the world would be overrun with fomori.
